Come experience the speed, skill, tradition, and excitement of Indian Relay Racing at the Fort Washakie Historic Stampede!
Men’s Indian Relay Racing is one of the most exciting and demanding events in Indigenous horse racing. It combines incredible horsemanship, athletic ability, courage, and teamwork in a fast-paced race that honors a long-standing tradition.
Each relay team works together to move through the race at full speed. The rider must guide his horse around the track, dismount at the exchange area, and transition to another horse while his teammates and horses prepare for the next exchange. Every second matters, and a clean exchange can make the difference between winning and losing.
Indian Relay is more than a race. It is a celebration of Native horsemanship, community, culture, and the connection between horse and rider. Generations of riders have carried this tradition forward, keeping the spirit of competition and cultural pride alive.
At the Fort Washakie Historic Stampede, spectators can experience the power and excitement of Indian Relay racing right here on the historic rodeo grounds and relay track.

Ladies’ Indian Relay Racing showcases the incredible horsemanship, athleticism, courage, and determination of Indigenous women. These riders bring the same intensity and competitive spirit to the relay track while representing their families, communities, and generations of Native horsewomen.
The race requires more than simply riding fast. Riders must have exceptional balance, timing, communication, and trust in their horses. During the relay exchange, every movement must be quick and precise. A successful team depends on the rider, horses, and entire relay crew working together.
Ladies’ Indian Relay is also an important part of keeping Native horsemanship traditions strong and visible. It gives women an opportunity to compete at a high level while inspiring younger generations to learn about horses, racing, teamwork, and their cultural heritage.
At the Fort Washakie Historic Stampede, the ladies take to the historic relay track with speed and determination, continuing a proud tradition of Indigenous horse racing.
